Measure area and depth together
Square footage alone is not enough. Record desired depth for each bed, mark areas that need soil amendment instead of only mulch, and ask contractors to convert those notes into cubic yards before quoting.

Document delivery and access
Bulk material may be cheap, but labor rises if crews cannot dump near the beds. Photograph gates, stairs, parking, slopes, and paths so bidders can decide whether wheelbarrow or bagged delivery changes the price.

Separate material quality from labor
A quote should name mulch type, compost or soil blend, delivery fee, bed prep, spreading labor, and cleanup. Without those details, a low total may simply mean cheaper material or missing preparation.

Plan DIY work realistically
DIY spreading can save labor, but only if you have tools, time, disposal bags, and a safe place for delivered material. Decide ahead of time which tasks you will actually finish before accepting a partial-service quote.
